AMD's Helios Lands OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft Before Shipping
AMD made its clearest bid yet for AI infrastructure dominance on July 23, 2026, announcing Helios at its sold-out Advancing AI conference in San Francisco. CEO Lisa Su called it the tech industry's "highest-performance AI rack." The customer list suggests some people believe her.
The Lineup
OpenAI, Meta, Oracle, Anthropic, and Microsoft are all signed up for Helios deployments. Anthropic and AMD announced a strategic partnership on July 22, covering up to two gigawatts of GPU capacity. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced Azure infrastructure expansion with Helios on July 21.
The deals were signed before Helios ships. AMD has it scheduled for later in 2026.
The Benchmark Claim
AMD says Helios beats Nvidia's Vera Rubin rack-scale system across multiple benchmarks, according to The Register. Benchmark comparisons at this scale are workload-dependent, so "multiple benchmarks" is doing some work in that sentence. Nvidia's competing rack-scale systems are Vera Rubin and Grace Blackwell. AMD is targeting both.
What Else AMD Announced
Helios was first revealed in 2025 and shown publicly at CES 2026. The system targets frontier model training and inference at gigawatt scale. AMD also introduced Venice-X, a CPU designed for data centers and high-computing workloads, expected in 2027.
On market size: AMD projects the AI accelerator market will reach approximately $1.4 trillion by 2030. The company expects GPUs to dominate that figure through the decade, citing algorithm immaturity and evolving workloads that favor programmable hardware over fixed-function alternatives.
The Takeaway
Five of the largest AI spenders committed to the same non-Nvidia rack system before it ships. These are companies with strong incentives to diversify hardware supply chains. AMD did not have this customer list two years ago.
Whether Helios delivers on Lisa Su's "highest-performance" claim at production scale is a question for 2027. The demand signal is a 2026 fact.
