Anthropic Is Discussing a Custom AI Chip With Samsung
Anthropic is in early talks with Samsung about a custom AI chip, according to The Information, reported July 3, 2026. Details are thin because there are almost no details: Anthropic has not determined what the chip will be used for, how it will fit into a server, or how powerful it will be.
That is a notable amount of undecided things for a chip collaboration that is getting coverage.
The Context
Anthropic currently runs its compute on chips from Google, Amazon, and Nvidia. Reuters reported in April 2026 that chip shortages were pushing the company to consider building its own silicon. The Samsung discussions appear to be a continuation of that exploration.
Samsung is not a surprising partner. The company already manufactures chips for Nvidia and is jointly working with Nvidia on an AI chip factory in South Korea. Samsung has also had chip-making discussions with Google. In other words, Samsung has relationships with most of Anthropic's current chip suppliers.
The Competitive Picture
OpenAI announced a custom inference processor called Jalapeño, developed in partnership with Broadcom. OpenAI claims Jalapeño delivers better performance-per-watt than competitor chips. Google and Amazon both offer custom TPUs as part of their cloud services.
The pattern is consistent. Every major player in AI infrastructure is trying to reduce dependence on merchant silicon. Whether Anthropic's Samsung discussions lead to something comparable to Jalapeño or end up as a line in a future Reuters piece about talks that went nowhere is not yet clear.
What to Watch
Inference chips and training chips are different problems. A company optimizing for running models at scale needs different silicon than one optimizing for training new ones. Anthropic has not said which direction it is heading, which makes the significance of these discussions hard to evaluate.
For now: early-stage talks, no specs, no timeline. The story is the direction of travel, not any particular destination.
