Google-Intel Expand AI Infrastructure Deal; Arm Produces Its First Chip
Two chip-related announcements this week. Google and Intel expanded their AI infrastructure partnership. Arm produced its first self-made processor.
Google Cloud Deepens Intel Tie-Up
Google Cloud and Intel announced an expanded multiyear partnership. Google Cloud will deploy Intel Xeon 6 chips across AI, cloud, and inference workloads. The companies will also co-develop processors going forward.
The collaboration started in 2021 with custom ASIC-based IPUs (infrastructure processing units). IPUs offload datacenter tasks from CPUs to accelerate and manage workloads. The expanded deal moves beyond IPUs into Xeon silicon and broader co-development.
Arm Goes From Design to Production
Arm Holdings, owned by SoftBank, announced the Arm AGI CPU. It's the first chip Arm has produced itself.
"AGI CPU" is an ambitious name. Whether the hardware earns it is a separate question.
The Pattern
Both moves point toward more vertical integration in AI chip supply chains. Google partnering on processor co-development and Arm skipping the licensing step to make its own silicon reflect the same pressure: control more of the stack. How the hardware performs in production will determine whether either move matters.
