OpenAI Removes ChatGPT Text Limits, Rolls Out GPT-5.6 Across Tiers
OpenAI is removing all limits on text-based chats for every ChatGPT user. The change arrives the week of August 11, 2026, alongside a model refresh that touches every subscription tier.
What's Changing by Tier
Free and Go users get two things: unlimited text conversations and a new "Think" button for higher reasoning on complex questions. Their default model switches from GPT-5.5 to GPT-5.6 Luna.
Plus and Pro users, who already got GPT-5.6 Sol on August 6, receive a thinking slider to adjust reasoning depth per query. Sol is described as optimized for quick tasks: questions, web research, advice, planning, writing, and decisions.
Limits on files, images, voice, and image generation remain in place for free-tier users. The unlimited offer is text only.
The Model Numbers
OpenAI claims GPT-5.6 Luna reduces factual errors by 62% compared to GPT-5.5-Instant in internal evaluation. GPT-5.6 Sol claims 68%. Both comparisons are against the same baseline. Both are internal. Neither comes with a methodology document.
A 60-plus percent error reduction is a large claim. Whether it holds on real-world queries rather than curated test sets is a separate question.
One technical detail: the GPT-5.6 Sol served to Plus and Pro users is a distinct version from the Sol used in Codex and Work products. OpenAI hasn't published specifics on how the two differ.
The Scale Context
ChatGPT crossed 1 billion weekly users. Removing text limits at that scale is a meaningful operational commitment. OpenAI is betting that text generation costs are manageable enough to absorb unlimited queries across the full user base.
One possibility is that per-character inference costs have dropped far enough that hard limits create more user friction than they save in compute. Another is that the Think button functions as a soft tier signal: users who want deep reasoning on everything will find Plus or Pro more practical.
Bottom Line
Free users get a better default model and no text cap starting August 11. Plus and Pro users got the Sol upgrade August 6. The friction that remains for free users is everything except text.
The factual error reductions are internal numbers. Third-party benchmarks will tell a clearer story.
